Cenni Storici

Historical Background

An event in the territory and for the territory. From these assumptions, the Taranto Film Festival was born in 2016.

The theme of the 1st edition is Identity, around which three different topics revolve: Art, Science and Thought. Alongside these, there is the care of the visual memory of Taranto, the promotion of the Festivals that animate the area and finally a tribute to Rodolfo Valentino.

In this edition stand out the contest for videomakers “Taranto at night”, acting workshops, concerts, conferences, seminars and the review “Valentino on the Walls”, all made in the heart of Taranto, between the Città Vecchia, the Borgo Umbertino and historical buildings.

The leitmotif of the 2017-2018 edition is the Metamorphosis, also understood as a message of change and transformation for the city of Taranto, starting from its potential, in order to be reborn.

An 11-month program of events, workshops, screenings, appointments with prominent figures from the big screen, contests for short films, acting workshops and foreign collaborations, such as the German Deutsche Kinemathek and the Russian film production Mosfilm.

In this edition, the Taranto Film Festival goes down the streets, among the people, giving everyone the opportunity to read themed texts with “Maratona K” and attend the reconstruction of the Passion of Christ with “Transit”, precisely in the days of the Tarantine Holy Week, without forgetting the meetings with writers and film authors in the Acclavio Municipal Library of Taranto.

The Covid emergency blocks subsequent editions: bureaucratic and organizational difficulties move the 2019 edition to the beginning of 2020, the year in which everything stops.

But in 2021 we start again, with the 2020 edition, made online, which resumes the ranks of that interrupted path.

The theme of the 2020 edition is Utopia, explored through the review dedicated to the theme, the screenings of the films in competition and the workshops on the professions of cinema.

The streaming realization of the Festival allowed a great interaction with the public, in terms of views on the websites www.mostracinemataranto.com  and www.levantefilmfestival.com, as well as the social channels dedicated to the event: a real boom in online voting and thousands of participants in screenings and events proposed on the net.

The 2020 edition of the Taranto Film Festival, held in December 2021 due to the pandemic, was preceded by a spin-off, “Medioevo Prossimo Venturo”, a review of pop and cult films held in the summer of 2021 in fascinating naturalistic scenery of the Oasis of the Battendieri of Taranto, on the shores of the Mar Piccolo.

We are in 2022: with the Covid situation significantly improved, we reach the 2021 edition, called “The gaze of the Tiger”: cinema made by women from Islamic countries.

The Festival takes place in the presence, once again in the Oasi dei Battendieri, but also online, given the remarkable result obtained in the last edition.

It should be emphasized that the aspects related to the presentation of the films, the speeches, the online connections with the authors, will have a training function for the present and remote public, both on the cinematographic level and on the cultural and social one, given the profound political and solidarity significance of the event
